So.
Truth time – I am a massive perfectionist. If there was a Perfectionists Anonymous group, I would be its leader.
This latest tip is one which I, and many nit-picky creatives like me, have struggled to get to grips with…. and if I am being honest, will always struggle with.
The tip is …. ‘Write Fast’ …. channel your inner Woody and run like the wind Bullseye!
Writing fast and editing later is an excellent practice to get into for a number of reasons:
1. Writing fast allows your brain to dump onto the page. Whatever weird and wonderful idea you are experiencing can be born, and its little nuances allowed to appear. When you look at it later, your eyes may widen in horror, but at least you won’t miss anything.
2. Your typing and your thoughts can sync-up, like a well-oiled Transformer. Most people think much faster than they can type, and letting the words come will encourage whole new thought trails, which could take your writing somewhere incredible!
3. …and most importantly, by writing quickly, you don’t have time to go all Sherlock Holmes on your writing, critiquing each comma and spelling mistake with magnifying glass.
If you edit / critique as you go (hand firmly held high on this one at times!), you have far less energy to spend on your writing. In trying to perfect sentence one, you prevent yourself from unleashing the literary beast we all want to see.
So type type type. Set the page alight, and wear away the keys on your keyboard.
Embrace the spelling mistakes and laugh at how many different ways you can spell the simplest of words.
One day someone will want to pay a pretty penny for your original notes – let’s make them entertaining! 😉
